باربد صفایی مهرو متولد 1360 است. فارغ التحصیل کارشناسی ارشد تنوع زیستی در رشته مهندسی محیط زیست است. در سال 1378 با ورود به دانشگاه و پیوستن به گروه های دانشجویی پا به مناطق کویری ایران گذاشت و شیفته تنوع زیستی ایران شد. او در سال 1380 همراه با یک گروه خزنده شناس از دانشگاه برکلی کالیفرنیا راهی بلوچستان شد تا به جستجوی خزندگان آن منطقه بپردازد. باربد و همسرش در سال 1385 موسسه خزنده شناسان پارس را تاسیس نموند که این موسسه موفق شد در سال 1395 جایزه ملی محیط زیست را به دلیل اقدامات موثری در حفاظت از گونه های در معرض خطر انقراض دوزیستان و خزندگان ایران از آن خود کند. تحقیقات او در ایران و کشورهای همسایه نظیر عراق موجب کشف چندین گونه جدید برای دنیای علم شده است. در سال 1399 باربد صفایی مهرو و هانیه غفاری کتاب دوزیستان ایران را از طریق انتشارات دانشگاه کردستان منتشر نمودند. این کتاب در اولین جشنواره تنوع زیستی سازمان حفاظت محیط‌زیست بعنوان کتاب برگزیده و در دوره شانزدهم و هفدهم مهرگان علم موفق به کسب عنوان کتاب برگزیده شد.
